The Grassy Narrows Education Authority (GNEA) is dedicated to providing comprehensive and culturally enriched education to the Grassy Narrows First Nation community. Our mission is to empower students through quality education that respects and integrates Anishinaabe culture, preparing them for success in both traditional and contemporary contexts.
Our Educational Divisions
GNEA provides educational services designed to support the diverse needs of our community:
- Early Years Education: The Migizi Wazason Child Care Centre nurtures children (6 months to 3 years) with a focus on emotional, cognitive, and cultural growth, building a strong foundation alongside the elementary school.
- Elementary School: Sakatcheway Anishinabe Elementary School (JK-Grade 8) offers hands-on, land-based learning aligned with the Ontario Curriculum, blending modern academics with Anishinaabe teachings.
- High School: Sakatcheway Anishinabe High School (Grades 9-12) offers a variety of courses, including trades programs in auto mechanics, welding, and hospitality, along with outdoor education experiences in the Boreal Forest.
- Learning Hub: The Learning Hub provides a supportive space where students receive individualized assistance to boost confidence and academic success.
Each division works together to deliver continuous, culturally relevant education at every stage of learning.
Our Community
Grassy Narrows First Nation, also known as Asubpeeschoseewagong, is an Ojibwe community located north of Kenora in the Boreal Forest. Our people have lived on this land for generations, guided by our connection to nature, language, and cultural teachings.
Today, GNEA continues to honor that heritage by integrating Anishinaabe knowledge into all areas of education, ensuring our children grow up proud of who they are while gaining the tools to thrive in today’s world.
