About Us - Grassy Narrows First Nation (GNFN)
Welcome to
Grassy Narrows First Nation
Grassy Narrows First Nation (GNFN), known as Asubpeeschoseewagong Anishinaabek, is a proud Anishinaabe community located in Northwestern Ontario. Rooted in our traditions, language, and connection to the land, we are a resilient community committed to preserving our culture and creating a sustainable, thriving future for all our members.
Through unity, cultural reclamation, and self-governance, we strive to foster well-being and prosperity for our people while protecting the sacred connection to our lands and heritage.
Our History
Grassy Narrows has a rich history deeply connected to the land and Anishinaabe traditions. For centuries, we lived in harmony with nature, relying on the forest, rivers, and lakes for sustenance and spiritual guidance.
Our way of life changed significantly with colonization. The 1873 signing of Treaty 3 promised to protect our traditional practices but was not upheld, leading to relocation, residential schools, and devastating mercury poisoning from industrial pollution. These challenges disrupted our livelihoods and caused lasting harm to our people.

Our Vision and Values
Grassy Narrows First Nation envisions a resilient, self-sustaining community where everyone thrives in harmony with our land, traditions, and cultural identity. Rooted in Anishinaabe teachings, we are committed to healing, unity, and self-determination, honoring our past while building a future of balance, purpose, and cultural pride—a path to mino bimaadiziwin, a good and fulfilling life.
